As a nickel-based superalloy, Inconel 718 is widely used in aerospace, energy, and other fields due to its high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. However, its performance undergoes significant changes in low-temperature environments—especially its toughness, which directly affects the operational reliability of Inconel 718 capillary tubes.
The Toughness of Inconel 718 Is Closely Linked to Its Microstructure
Inconel 718 has a face-centered cubic (FCC) γ-phase matrix, supplemented by strengthening phases (γ' and γ''). In low-temperature environments, the thermal motion of atoms inside the material weakens, making dislocation slip difficult and thus hindering plastic deformation. Meanwhile, low temperatures promote the precipitation and agglomeration of secondary-phase particles (such as carbides and nitrides) in Inconel 718. These hard phases act as sources of crack initiation, further reducing the material’s toughness.
Inconel 718 Capillary Tubes Undergo a Ductile-Brittle Transition as Temperature Decreases
At room temperature, Inconel 718 exhibits excellent toughness and can withstand a certain degree of plastic deformation without fracturing. However, when the temperature drops to -100°C or lower, the material’s impact absorption energy decreases sharply, and the crack propagation rate accelerates significantly—leading to obvious brittle behavior.
For example, in low-temperature scenarios such as deep-sea exploration and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation, Inconel 718 capillary tubes may suffer brittle fractures due to mechanical vibration or external impact. This can result in fluid leakage or equipment failure.
The Toughness of Welded Joints in Inconel 718 Capillary Tubes Is More Complex in Low Temperatures
The microstructure of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal formed during welding differs from that of the base material. Issues such as coarse grain structure and compositional segregation exacerbate the tendency toward low-temperature embrittlement. Additionally, tiny welding defects (e.g., pores, incomplete fusion) easily become starting points for crack propagation under low-temperature stress, significantly reducing the overall reliability of the capillary tubes.
Measures to Improve the Low-Temperature Toughness of Inconel 718
To enhance the toughness of Inconel 718 in low-temperature environments, methods such as optimizing heat treatment processes and adding alloying elements are currently widely adopted:
By adjusting the parameters of solution treatment and aging treatment, grain refinement and improved distribution of secondary phases can be achieved.
Adding elements like titanium (Ti) and niobium (Nb) helps form stable carbides, reducing the precipitation of harmful phases.
In the future, with in-depth research into the low-temperature performance of materials, the application potential of Inconel 718 in low-temperature fields is expected to be further unlocked.
