Key Differences Between TP304/316L and “General” Stainless Steel Tubes
Standard & Certification • TP304/316L: ASTM/ASME A213, A269, A312—mandatory hydrostatic, eddy-current, PMI and intergranular corrosion tests. • General 304/316: GB/T 14976, JIS G3459, etc.; tests and tolerances are optional or less stringent.
Chemical Composition (wt %) Element | TP304 | General-304 | TP316L | General-316 C | ≤0.08 | ≤0.08 | ≤0.03 | ≤0.08 Mo | — | — | 2.0–3.0| 2.0–3.0 Low-carbon “L” grade plus Mo gives TP316L superior resistance to sensitization and chloride pitting.
Corrosion & High-Temperature Strength • TP316L withstands chlorides, sulfuric and marine environments far better than TP304. • TP304/316L tubes retain creep strength up to ~525 °C; general tubes have no guaranteed high-temperature data.
Weldability • TP316L ≤0.03 %C eliminates post-weld sensitization; general 304/316 may require solution annealing after welding.
Cost • TP316L ≈ TP304 +15 %. • General grades are 5–8 % cheaper but lack full NDT and certification, increasing hidden risk.
